High school students gain hands-on insight into brain research at BRI

On July 30, 2025, students from Hosen Gakuen High School in Tokyo visited BRI, touring Depts of System Pathology for Neurological Disorders (Ueno Lab) and Neurology.

At the Ueno Lab, the visit began with an introduction to research on "Neural Circuits and Recovery in the Brain." Using photographs and videos, researchers explained how they investigate neural networks to reconstruct circuits damaged by conditions such as stroke or spinal cord injury. The tour then continued with a demonstration of mouse brain sectioning, followed by microscopic observation of fluorescently stained brain tissue.

In the Dept of Neurology, visitors were introduced to pathophysiological research aimed at elucidating disease mechanisms. They learned that advancing such research requires knowledge from a wide range of fields beyond medicine and were shown how findings are translated back to society. The tour included microscopic observation of human brain pathological specimens and an overview of the equipment used in daily experiments.

We hope this visit will deepen the students' interest in neuroscience and inspire them to further their learning.
