Research Focus

The neurosurgeons, neurologists, and neuropathologists of the Brain Research Institute, Niigata University, have been engaged in high-quality clinicopathological practice for more than 50 years. Through these longstanding efforts, we have established a comprehensive collection of human brain tissue resources derived from consecutive autopsies and surgical resections. As an academic pathology department, we utilize these valuable resources to advance medical science through both independent and collaborative research aimed at elucidating the pathomechanisms underlying brain disorders.
Our collection currently comprises more than 3,400 autopsy cases and 20,000 surgical biopsy cases. Among these, over 30,000 frozen brain tissue samples constitute one of the largest collections in Asia and represent a globally significant research resource.
In April 2026, together with the Department of Pathology, we launched the Center for Human Brain Resource Initiative (ChBRI). As a participating center in the Joint Usage/Research Center program and a core hub of the Japan Brain Bank Net (JBBN), we promote collaborative research on a wide range of neurological and psychiatric disorders.
