BRI Associate Professor Motokazu Uchigashima (Dept of Cellular Neuropathology) has been awarded a KAKENHI grant-in-aid for Transformative Research Areas (A) FY2020. His research is titled "Inducing lifelong plasticity (iPlasticity) by brain rejuvenation: elucidation and manipulation of critical period mechanisms".

The grant-in-aid for Transformative Research Areas (A) is a succeeding category to the grant-in-aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas (Research in a proposed research area) that aims to generate renovation and/or transformations in academic areas along with developing innovative and creative scientific research by promotion of collective research with new perspective or methods under organic coordination of diverse research groups. Dr Uchigashima is among the 20 winners of the grant for FY2020 that will provide 50-300 million yen for 5 years.

We are hopeful that the grant will further promote his research into the development of brain functions based on the transient increase in neural circuitry after birth, such as the acquisition of language and absolute pitch.
