Annual World Brain Awareness Week event held at BRI
On March 26, 2025, BRI held its annual event, Let's Examine the Human Brain and Mind, welcoming high school and university students.
This event is part of Brain Awareness Week, a global campaign that promotes public interest and support for brain science. BRI scientists led lectures and lab tours, attracting 61 participants from Niigata and beyond.
The first half of the event featured a series of lectures. BRI Director Prof Osamu Onodera opened the session, followed by presentations from Dr Yuriko Iwakura (Dept of Brain Tumor Biology) and Dr Norikazu Hara (Dept of Molecular Genetics), offering insights into the world of brain research. Prof Hitoshi Shimada (Dept of Functional Neurology & Neurosurgery) then responded to questions submitted in advance, many of which focused on future aspirations, such as "What should I do to become a doctor who studies the brain?" Prof Shimada emphasized the value of broadening one's perspective through not only academics but also reading and club activities.
In the second half, participants split into small groups for guided lab tours. They observed fluorescently stained cells, tried out experimental techniques, and used VR technology to explore the interior of small fish. Participants asked enthusiastic questions and engaged deeply with the scientific content.
Participant feedback included comments such as, "It was exciting to learn about research hands-on, and the game-like elements were fun," and "The answers to our questions were thorough, making the experience very fulfilling." We hope this event sparked greater curiosity in science and inspired students to continue exploring the field.
We look forward to welcoming even more participants next time.
