MEXT and JSPS delegation visits BRI for J-PEAKS

On June 19, 2025, a delegation from the Science and Technology Policy Bureau of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) visited Niigata University to exchange views with universities selected for the Program for Forming Japan's Peak Research Universities (J-PEAKS) and to tour related facilities. At BRI, they visited Dept of Pathology, where they were guided by Professor Akiyoshi Kakita.

During the visit to BRI, Prof Kakita provided an overview of the institute and highlighted its distinctive features. He explained the role of pathology in clinical practice and introduced BRI's long-standing brain bank initiative. The delegation then toured the facilities, where they viewed pathological samples, the freezer room used for preserving fresh-frozen tissue, and the brain cutting room where autopsy brains are dissected.

J-PEAKS aims to promote the formation of university consortiums that will drive the enhancement of research capabilities across Japan. To this end, J-PEAKS supports core universities in individual regions and universities with strengths in specific research fields toward creating an environment in which they can, in collaboration with other universities, strengthen their research capabilities by accelerating the internationalization and societal implementation of their research activities under strategic management backed by their exquisite and distinctive research capabilities as the core. Niigata University was selected for the program in FY2024.
