Press conference held for the research findings relating ischemic stroke

Microglia, the immune cells found within the brain, can attack and defend the brain responding to the disease state. Research group including our BRI Associate Professor Dr. Takayoshi Shimohata and Assistant Professor Dr. Masato Kanazawa (both in Dept. of Neurology) discovered that a cell therapy using microglia preconditioned by optimal oxygen-glucose deprivation induces anti-inflammatory M2 microglia. They demonstrated that administration of microglia preconditioned by oxygen-glucose deprivation to a rat model of focal cerebral ischemia promoted functional recovery, which is expected to be a novel therapeutic strategy against ischemic stroke.
The press conference was held at BRI on Monday, February 13, 2017.
