Ukraine is in a terrible state. If you take staying alive, or prospering, as a payoff, then when a selfish, aggressive character appears in a group of people who are mostly altruistic and kind, that character gains. Spreading cooperation widely, and keeping it for a long time, seems to be hard. Suppose America and Russia do not get along — I do not know the truth of that. If a powerful enemy then arrived from space, Dessler for the sake of argument, America and Russia would necessarily form a strong tag team. Dessler is hypothetical, of course.

I think we already have enemies of that scale. I do not know what will become of this coronavirus, but what if the first strain had been more virulent and more infectious. Even without COVID there are many intractable diseases, and there is still poverty. There are also many disabilities that are hard to understand. Could the world not unite by facing those common problems.
