In their words
To me, the most mysterious things in this world are the universe and the brain. The brain is a universe within life. At 18, out of awe for life and the brain, I entered medical school and took clinical clerkships across departments. In neurology I saw many patients living with neurodegenerative disease: the tremor and stiffness of Parkinson’s disease that a person cannot stop, and the loss of memory and cognitive function in Alzheimer’s disease, with the difficulty of continuing to live in ways that matter to the person. Easing symptoms did not feel like enough. I wanted to know why these diseases arise, and whether I could do more. That brought me to the Brain Research Institute, Niigata University. I believe that small steps in research can, in time, relieve the suffering of many patients.
